BLOOD ON HANDS … Refugee Boat Timeline Updated to December 5th

5th Dec

FURTHER UPDATE:

3.45pm WST – It seems asylum seekers have been found on shore at Christmas Island. The Shire President (Gordon Thompson) is reporting that the vessel sank on Monday, that there are around 30 people involved and that, as yet, there are no reports of deaths.

I have just seen a tweet from Oliver Laughland of the Guardian Australia that “Those on board have been living on a remote beach for the past 3 days. 8/9 were found by police wondering up a main road on CI earlier today”

The West Australian is reporting that, “A group of Burmese asylum seekers appears to have arrived on Christmas Island undetected. Christmas Island residents said a group of asylum seekers had been been discovered wandering on a remote road on the eastern part of the island this afternoon. They claimed to have arrived on the island on Moday when their boat came ashore at the remote Dolly Beach. Another larger group had remained behind at the beach while others went for help. They said there had been no fatalities.“

Later in that same report was the following wich seems to indicate a second vessel!

A man identified as Chris said he had heard a boatload of Sri Lankan asylum seekers had run aground on Greta Beach. “Apparently their boat has wrecked,” he told Macquarie Radio. “The Navy have raced over there. I heard the situation was quite bad.” He said the beach was small and surrounded by extremely high cliffs. It’s believed the boat arrived about 11am.”

Different beach – three days or a few hours? One boat or Two?

UPDATE

Herr ÜberGrossenFührer Morrison has broken his “no information” rule and announced that there has been an incident on the South East Coast of Christmas Island. To me that sounds like a sinking or a boat which has run aground on the rocks. The same thing happened in December 2010. Surely, with the increased and much touted surveillance our new “Border Protection” has brought to the area, no Asylum Seeker vessel could make it that close to the Island without being spotted! There is some incompetence shown here and I do hope it has not cost any lives.

Sue and I had been watching a sudden flurry of movement by HMAS Larrakia and an unknown vessel up and down the East Coast of Christmas Island and wondering at the reason. We suspected an unexpected arrival but did not dream that the Minister would be telling us so quickly.

Further updates will be made as available.

This Morning

Yahoo Australian News is reporting that “Another asylum vessel has arrived on Christmas Island – the third to make it to Australia since Indonesia said it would end all cooperation on people smuggling. Officials on Christmas Island say a vessel carrying about 60 people was intercepted last night. The passengers have been transferred at sea to a larger border protection vessel.” (Thanks Sue)

The “larger Border Protection Vessel” is probably ACV Ocean Protector which explains why she has hidden herself from the Live Marine Traffic sites. The question is, “Will these people be landed before 9am EST tomorrow so that they can be included in tomorrow’s press conference”?

Reports are that there are still around ten boats out there heading towards Christmas Island.

UPDATE:-

Mike Smith is reporting that ACV Ocean Protector has offloaded 50 people at Flying Fish Cove.  (Thanks Sue and “Z”)

On the other hand, Gordon Thompson has tweeted;

At this stage I will record 11 arrivals subject to the Uniformed Minion’s announcements on Friday.

I was expecting some action soon as I had spotted Ocean Protector break its “horizontal” (East West) patrol pattern. She haired off Northish to that same position…

NEWS FROM THE FRONTLINE:

New boat arrivals 21st October, via Gordon Thompson:
21st Oct; No information released by the Morrison Military Machine.

Two Vessels in Two Days! Mike Smith has reported that “Shaz” on Christmas Island has told him that 40 people, possibly Somalis, have been landed by ACV Triton. A number of us have been watching Titon’s antics this morning. She suddenly appeared yesterday afternoon travelling west, apparently directly from the mainland and since then has been moving around Flying Fish Cove.

Thanks, Vince, Sue and Marg for your help. It seems that Herr ÜberGrossenFührer Morrison has outsourced dealing with Asylum Seekers to the Romulans and their cloaking device!

20th Oct; No information released by the Morrison Military Machine.

At approximately 5pm WST, Gordon Thompson tweeted from Christmas Island, “kids small baby, women, men  Rohinga  probably 130 disembarked Navy Christmas Is 2:00pm. Rumour Abbott return home no process“

This appears to indicate that a single vessel has been intercepted and its occupants, Rohingya, a persecuted group from Burma, landed on Christmas Island. On Friday (20th), at the weekly Military Press conference “The Government has revealed that 73 asylum seekers were immediately flown back to Sri Lanka following an initial assessment on Christmas Island.“

If this is now the accepted practice then these persecuted people will be immediately sent back into danger. Perhaps it is not only the Australian people who are being kept in the dark but also the rest of the world. Especially the UNHCR since these actions completely breach our international obligations!

MEDIA RELEASE (RAC, NSW): NAURU REFUGEE ASSESSMENTS A SHAMBLES – ASYLUM SEEKERS BROUGHT TO AUSTRALIA

21 October 2013

Sixty asylum seekers, 23 Tamils and 37 Afghans and Pakistanis, were brought from Nauru to Curtin detention centre on Saturday 19 October.

The sixty brings the total number of asylum seekers brought to Australia from Nauru to around 200 – all of them asylum seekers who arrived in Australia after 12 August 2012 and 19 July 2013. Most of them have been on Nauru for around one year.

Unlike those earlier transferred from Nauru, this group of sixty have all had refugee determination interviews on Nauru, dating from March this year, but none have had any answers from Nauru authorities.

The group were told before they left that they could stay on Nauru, but it was uncertain when they would get answers to their refugee assessments and how long they might remain on Nauru. But if they came to Australia, they would re-processed from scratch.

“These asylum seekers have suffered the most terrible treatment at the hands of Australian authorities. Australia initially dumped them on Nauru a year ago, insisting that they were Nauru’s responsibility,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition.

“It was always a lie, and now what is very clear is that Nauru is completely unable to actually assess these people’s refugee claims. Nauru’s system is already collapsing under the strain. Nauru has been unable to deal with 200 claims; there is no way it is going to be able to process the 1,000 or so asylum seekers now on Nauru.”

Although the asylum seekers were told they would have to wait between four and six months to get answers, that was over seven months ago. When contacted by the Refugee Action Coalition, Nauru officials have been unable to say when any of the asylum seekers would get answers to their assessments.

“It is worse than pointless sending any asylum seekers to Nauru. The people, including the pregnant women and their babies, are simply victims of Scott Morrison’s domestic political agenda. All the asylum seekers on Nauru should be brought to Australia. The ones already here should be released from detention immediately and granted protection visas.

“These asylum seekers were sent to Nauru under Labor’s Pacific Solution mk II. Just like those sent by the Howard government, they were told they would never be resettled in Australia. Now they are here. Scott Morrison is just paling politics with people’s lives.”

This list is based on what is being reported in the MSM and what I can find from a couple of specialist sites. This is to give a layman’s impression of what is going on and may say more about the MSM than the facts.

Fears minors sent offshore alone

But yesterday on Nauru, resident Clint Deidenang claimed to have seen what appeared to be unaccompanied minors getting off a plane from Christmas Island and on to a bus for detention.“There were kids with their parents all together in little groups but there was also teenagers walking alone, one by one,” he said. “They seemed to be unaccompanied minors.”One refugee advocate told The Australian that unaccompanied minors on Christmas Island were visited on Tuesday night by immigration officials who told them to prepare for transfer to Nauru “within 40 hours”.
